One aperture, many consequences

A circular opening in a brick wall is deceptively simple. The geometry is ancient — oculi have marked domes and temples for two thousand years. But placing one into a contemporary façade forces every other decision on the elevation to respond: the coursing of the brick, the rhythm of the perforations, the scale of the surrounding openings.

The circle resists composition. It doesn't align with horizontal bands or vertical lines. It demands to be the centre of attention, which means the rest of the façade has to be quiet enough to let it speak.

Brick as a conversation, not a cladding

Red brick is a material of craft, not just colour. The colour shifts through the day — warm at sunrise, saturated at noon, deep at dusk — so the window frames not just a view, but a changing light condition. The perforations around it let air move through the façade, softening the mass and filtering the heat.

Done right, a single opening like this does the work of ten. Done wrong, it becomes a gimmick. The discipline is knowing which you are designing.
